Science

A study of science is mandatory for all students from Kindergarten to Year 10.

In science, students explore the natural and made worlds. They learn how to apply scientific skills, knowledge and understanding across a broad range of contexts.

Science provides a way of inquiring about the world around us. It explores evidence and investigates ways to discover, develop and produce solutions to real-world problems. The inquiry and skill-based nature of science opens doors to ideas and discoveries.

In Years 11 and 12, students can choose from different science disciplines, including:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Earth and Environmental Science
  • Investigating Science
  • Physics.

Science at Armidale High School

Stages 4 & 5

Science provides a way to answer questions about the biological, physical and technological world. Through the study of Science, students are equipped to become scientifically literate members of society able to process concepts that govern our lives and our planet.

In years 7-10, students engage in the processes of Working Scientifically – asking questions, posing and testing hypotheses, analysing and evaluating data, and communicating their understanding. Students will design and complete Student Research Projects both collaboratively and independently during Stages 4 and 5.

Through this process, students gain an appreciation for the importance of science in their lives and are able to engage in finding solutions to science-related personal, social and global issues, including shaping sustainable futures. Students have the opportunity to explore areas of current research and technology within the four strands of the Science Syllabus: Physical World, Chemical World, Living World and Earth and Space.

At the commencement of each school year, students are provided with an assessment schedule for the major tasks that will be completed over the school year.

Stage 6

In year 11, Students are able to choose to continue their study in the sciences – selecting one or all of Chemistry, Biology and Physics. Alternatively, they may elect to study Senior Science. In Year 12, students can continue their pattern of study, change to or add Senior Science to their study program. All of these subjects will contribute to achievement of an ATAR. Students receive career and course advice at the end of Year 10 to assist them with making the optimal subject selections for their future aspirations.

External opportunities

A number of opportunities for students to participate in external programs exist. These include:

  • UNE GRASS Science Investigation awards
  • Questacon regional tours
  • Science and Engineering Challenge
  • Science in the Bush
  • Kickstart Biology and Physics (Stage 6, hosted by AHS)
